Born and raised in a suburban area in Switzerland, Marcel Kalt has always had a strong connection to music. By exploring the record collections of his father and his uncle, a passion for different musical styles developed early on. The spectrum ranged from Afro-American influenced genres like soul, funk, and jazz, to electronic music, originating in Western and Central Europe. In the years of his youth, Marcel soon discovered his love for the resilient and experimental hiphop culture, at that time still untouched by the commercialized music industry. Strongly influenced by this sound aesthetic, Marcel started his own first attempts to produce instrumental sound drafts. After the first self-published songs via Soundcloud under the pseudonym „DRWN.“, various projects soon followed, which were released as cassettes or vinyl records in limited editions by various small labels all over the world. Marcel aka DRWN. has largely remained true to his dreamy, sluggish and low-fidelity hiphop beats, but now and then he dares to venture into more electronic or ambient-inspired realms.

Should You Pay For Spotify Playlist Placements?

Spotify is one of the most popular streaming services in the world, with millions of users globally. It has become a crucial platform for artists to share their music, reach new audiences, and generate revenue from streams. However, with millions of tracks available on the platform, it can be challenging for independent artists to get noticed. One solution that has gained popularity in recent years is paying for Spotify playlist placements. This article will explore the pros and cons of this practice and its impact on artists and the music industry.

What are Spotify Playlist Placements?

Spotify playlists are a curated selection of songs created by Spotify or third-party curators. They are designed to help listeners discover new music and enable artists to reach a broader audience. Playlist placements refer to the inclusion of a song on a popular playlist, which can increase the track's visibility and streams. Playlist placements can be organic, meaning a song is added to a playlist based on its popularity, or paid placements, where the artist or their representative pays a fee for the song to be added to a playlist.
Pros of Paying for Spotify Playlist Placements

Pros of Paying for Spotify Playlist Placements

1. Increased Exposure
One of the most significant benefits of paying for Spotify playlist placements is increased exposure. Getting your song added to a popular playlist can significantly increase the number of streams, which can lead to more fans and revenue. For independent artists with limited resources and marketing budgets, paid playlist placements can be a viable way to get their music in front of a wider audience.

2. Access to Larger Audiences
Spotify has over 345 million monthly active users globally, and many of these users listen to playlists regularly. Getting your song added to a popular playlist can expose your music to a large and diverse audience that you may not have reached otherwise. This can help you gain new fans, increase your social media following, and boost your music career.

3. A Cost-Effective Marketing Strategy
Compared to traditional advertising methods, paying for Spotify playlist placements can be a cost-effective way to promote your music. Many playlist curators offer packages at affordable rates, making it accessible to artists with a limited marketing budget. Additionally, playlist placements are more targeted than traditional advertising, as they are tailored to specific audiences interested in a particular genre or mood.

4. A Chance to Compete with Major Labels
In the music industry, major labels have a significant advantage over independent artists due to their resources and marketing budgets. Paid playlist placements level the playing field, giving independent artists a chance to compete with major labels. If your song is added to a popular playlist, it can generate a considerable amount of streams and increase your visibility, regardless of whether you are signed to a major label or not.
Cons of Paying for Spotify Playlist Placements

Cons of Paying for Spotify Playlist Placements

1. Ethical Concerns
Paying for playlist placements raises ethical concerns, as it can be seen as a way to buy success rather than earn it. In the past, some playlist curators have been accused of accepting payments in exchange for adding songs to their playlists, regardless of the quality or popularity of the track. This can create an uneven playing field and harm artists who cannot afford to pay for placements. It can also violate Spotify's Terms and Conditions

2. Lack of Transparency
Another concern with paid playlist placements is the lack of transparency in the process. Spotify does not allow paid placements on their official playlists, but some third-party curators may accept payments in exchange for adding songs to their playlists. This can make it difficult for artists to know if their money is being spent effectively or if they are getting value for their investment.

3. Limited Impact
While paid playlist placements can increase exposure and streams, they may not necessarily translate into long-term success. For example, if a song is added to a popular playlist but is not well-received by listeners, it may not generate additional streams or fans. Additionally, paid playlist placements may not necessarily lead to increased revenue for the artist. Spotify pays out a fraction of a penny per stream, and while an increase in streams can generate more revenue, it may not be significant enough to justify the cost of the paid placement.

4. The Risk of Ruining the Artist's Reputation
If an artist's song is added to a playlist that is not relevant to their genre or style, it can harm their reputation and credibility. Additionally, if the playlist curator adds the song to the wrong playlist or adds it to a playlist with a small audience, it can harm the artist's chances of success. Therefore, it is crucial for artists to research and select the right playlists and curators to ensure that their investment pays off.

Conclusion

Paying for Spotify playlist placements can be a viable way for independent artists to increase their exposure and reach new audiences. It can also level the playing field and give independent artists a chance to compete with major labels. However, the practice raises ethical concerns and lacks transparency, and the impact of paid placements may be limited. Ultimately, artists must weigh the pros and cons and carefully consider the playlists and curators they work with to ensure that their investment pays off. Regardless of whether an artist decides to pay for playlist placements or not, creating high-quality music and engaging with fans remains the most critical factor in building a successful music career on Spotify.

How LoFi Music Effects The Brain

How LoFi Music Effects The Brain

Lofi music, also known as "low fidelity" music, is a genre that is characterized by its simplistic beats, mellow melodies, and sound distortions. This genre of music is often used as background music for studying, working, and relaxing due to its calming effects. Lofi music has become increasingly popular in recent years, and many people swear by its ability to help them focus, relax, and even sleep. In this article, we will explore the effects of lofi music on the brain and how it can be used to improve cognitive function, reduce stress, and promote mental health.

The Effects of Lofi Music on the Brain

Lofi music has been shown to have a number of positive effects on the brain. Research has found that listening to music can activate several areas of the brain, including the auditory cortex, prefrontal cortex, and limbic system. The prefrontal cortex is responsible for cognitive functions such as attention, working memory, and decision-making. The limbic system is responsible for emotional regulation and motivation. By activating these areas of the brain, lofi music can improve cognitive function and reduce stress.

One study found that listening to music while performing cognitive tasks can improve performance and reduce stress. The study found that participants who listened to music while performing a cognitive task had lower levels of cortisol, a hormone associated with stress, compared to participants who performed the task in silence. Additionally, the participants who listened to music had better performance on the cognitive task than those who performed the task in silence (1).

Another study found that listening to music can enhance creativity. The study found that participants who listened to music while performing a creative task had higher levels of divergent thinking, which is the ability to come up with multiple solutions to a problem. The study also found that participants who listened to music had more original and creative ideas compared to those who performed the task in silence (2).

Lofi music, in particular, has been shown to have a calming effect on the brain. One study found that listening to slow and calming music can reduce anxiety and increase relaxation. The study found that participants who listened to slow and calming music had lower levels of cortisol and reported feeling more relaxed than those who listened to fast and upbeat music (3).

Furthermore, research has shown that listening to music can release dopamine, a neurotransmitter associated with pleasure and reward. This release of dopamine can result in a feeling of pleasure and satisfaction, which can improve mood and motivation. This is particularly relevant for lofi music, which is often used as background music for activities such as studying or working. The release of dopamine can help individuals feel more motivated and focused while performing these tasks.

How To Use The Roland SP-404 MKII To Make LoFi Beats

How To Use The Roland SP-404 MKII To Make LoFi Beats

The Roland SP-404 MKII is a popular sampler and sequencer used by many musicians and producers to create lofi beats. It is known for its intuitive interface, high-quality sound, and versatile features that allow for easy manipulation of samples and patterns. In this article, we will go over how to use the SP-404 MKII to create lofi beats, from sampling to sequencing to adding effects.
Sampling With The SP-404 MKII

Sampling With The SP-404 MKII

Sampling is the process of recording and capturing sounds from various sources and incorporating them into your beats. To sample with the SP-404 MKII, you will need to connect your instrument or device to the input jack on the device. This can be done using a standard ¼ inch cable. Once your device is connected, press the “Record” button on the SP-404 MKII and start playing your instrument. The device will record the sound, and you can adjust the start and end points of the sample using the “Trim” function.
To create a lofi sound, it is important to sample from sources that have a vintage or analog feel. This can include vinyl records, cassette tapes, or old radio broadcasts. You can also sample from digital sources, but you may want to add some noise or distortion to create a vintage sound

Sequencing

After sampling, it is time to sequence your beats. The SP-404 MKII has a step sequencer that allows you to create patterns and sequences easily. To start sequencing, press the “Pattern Select” button and choose an empty pattern. Then, press the “Pattern Sequencer” button to enter the step sequencer.

The step sequencer is divided into 16 steps, and each step represents a beat in your pattern. You can enter notes into each step by pressing the corresponding pad. The SP-404 MKII has 12 pads, which can be used to trigger samples, record patterns, and more. To change the pitch of a sample, hold down the “Shift” button and press the pad. You can also add swing to your pattern by adjusting the “Swing” knob.

To create a lofi feel in your beats, you may want to experiment with different tempos and rhythms. Lofi beats often have a slower tempo and a laid-back feel, so try playing around with different rhythms and groove settings to find the right sound.

Effects

Adding effects is an important part of creating a lofi sound. The SP-404 MKII has a wide range of effects, including filters, delays, reverbs, and more. To add effects, press the “FX” button and choose an effect. You can adjust the parameters of the effect using the knobs and buttons on the device.

One of the most popular effects for lofi beats is the vinyl simulator. This effect emulates the sound of a vinyl record, adding crackles and pops to your beats. To use the vinyl simulator, choose the “Vinyl Sim” effect and adjust the parameters to your liking.

Another popular effect for lofi beats is the bit crusher. This effect reduces the bit depth and sample rate of your sound, creating a distorted and degraded sound. To use the bit crusher, choose the “Bit Crusher” effect and adjust the parameters to your liking.
Picture

Layering

Layering is the process of combining multiple sounds and samples to create a more complex sound. The SP-404 MKII allows you to layer up to 12 samples on a single pad, making it easy to create complex patterns and textures.

To layer samples, press the “Layer” button and choose a pad. Then, press the “Record” button and start playing your instrument. The SP-404 MKII will record the sound and add it to the layer. You can add up to 12 layers to a single pad, and each layer can be adjusted in volume and panning to create a layered sound.

Layering is a great way to add depth and complexity to your lofi beats. Try layering different instruments or samples to create a rich, textured sound. You can also use layering to create variations in your patterns, by adding or removing layers at different points in the pattern.

Chopping

Chopping is the process of taking a sample and dividing it into smaller parts, which can then be rearranged to create a new pattern or melody. The SP-404 MKII has a “Chop” function that allows you to chop samples into smaller parts and assign them to different pads.

To chop a sample, press the “Chop” button and choose a sample. The SP-404 MKII will automatically chop the sample into equal parts, which can be assigned to different pads. You can then rearrange the chopped parts to create a new pattern or melody.

Chopping is a great way to create new sounds and patterns from existing samples. Try chopping up a sample and rearranging the parts to create a new melody or rhythm. You can also use chopping to create variations in your patterns, by rearranging the chopped parts at different points in the pattern.

Final Thoughts

The Roland SP-404 MKII is a powerful tool for creating lofi beats. With its intuitive interface, high-quality sound, and versatile features, it is a great choice for musicians and producers looking to create vintage and analog sounds. By sampling, sequencing, adding effects, layering, and chopping, you can create unique and compelling lofi beats that stand out from the crowd. So go ahead, experiment with different sounds and techniques, and see what kind of lofi beats you can create with the SP-404 MKII.

J Dilla & His Influence On LoFi Hip Hop

J Dilla & His Influence On LoFi Hip Hop

J Dilla, born James Dewitt Yancey, was an American record producer, rapper, and musician who was instrumental in shaping the sound of hip-hop and electronic music in the late 1990s and early 2000s. He is widely regarded as one of the greatest producers in the history of hip-hop, and his influence can be heard in the work of countless artists today.

One of the hallmarks of J Dilla's sound was the use of what has come to be known as "LoFi" production techniques. LoFi, short for "low fidelity," is a genre of music that has gained popularity in recent years, characterized by its use of intentionally low-quality recording equipment and a focus on the imperfections and limitations of the recording process.

In this article, we will explore the history and legacy of J Dilla and his influence on the LoFi genre. We will examine his unique approach to production, his use of sampling, and his impact on the evolution of hip-hop and electronic music.
The Score by The Fugees

Early Years

J Dilla was born in Detroit, Michigan, in 1974. He grew up in a musical family and was exposed to a wide variety of genres, including jazz, soul, and funk. He began producing music in his early teens, and by the mid-1990s, he had established himself as one of the most talented producers in the underground hip-hop scene.

J Dilla first gained national recognition in 1996, when he produced the album "The Score" for the Fugees. The album was a commercial and critical success, and J Dilla's production received widespread praise for its innovative use of sampling and its incorporation of live instrumentation.
J Dilla's Production Techniques

J Dilla's Production Techniques

J Dilla's production techniques were characterized by a meticulous attention to detail and an emphasis on the texture and atmosphere of the music. He was known for his use of unconventional sampling sources, including obscure jazz and soul records, and his ability to manipulate these samples into entirely new compositions.

One of the key elements of J Dilla's sound was his use of the MPC 3000, a sampler and sequencer that allowed him to chop up and rearrange samples with incredible precision. He would spend hours poring over records, searching for the perfect break or snippet of a melody, and then spend even more time manipulating and rearranging those samples to create his signature sound.

Another defining aspect of J Dilla's production was his use of live instrumentation. He often played keyboards, drums, and other instruments himself, and would incorporate these performances into his beats to create a more organic, human feel.

J Dilla's Influence on Hip-Hop

J Dilla's influence on hip-hop cannot be overstated. His unique approach to production helped to shape the sound of the genre in the late 1990s and early 2000s, and his impact can still be heard in the work of countless producers and artists today.

One of J Dilla's most significant contributions to hip-hop was his use of unconventional sampling sources. He was known for digging deep into the crates to find obscure jazz, soul, and funk records, and then using these samples to create entirely new compositions. This approach helped to expand the sonic palette of hip-hop and inspired a generation of producers to experiment with new sounds and textures.

J Dilla's emphasis on the atmosphere and texture of the music also had a profound impact on hip-hop. He was known for creating beats that were lush and layered, with a sense of depth and dimensionality that was rare in the genre at the time. This approach helped to elevate hip-hop production to a new level of sophistication and helped to pave the way for the emergence of the "neo-soul" movement, which blended elements of hip-hop, R&B, and jazz.

J Dilla's influence can be heard in the work of many prominent hip-hop artists today, including Kanye West, Kendrick Lamar, and Flying Lotus, all of whom have cited him as a major influence on their work. His legacy is also celebrated in the annual "Dilla Day" events, which take place in cities around the world and feature performances and tributes from artists who have been inspired by his music.

J Dilla and the LoFi Movement

J Dilla and the LoFi Movement

J Dilla's influence extends beyond hip-hop and can also be felt in the emerging genre of LoFi music. LoFi, short for "low fidelity," is a genre of music that has gained popularity in recent years, characterized by its use of intentionally low-quality recording equipment and a focus on the imperfections and limitations of the recording process.

The roots of the LoFi movement can be traced back to the early days of hip-hop, when producers like J Dilla were using limited and often imperfect equipment to create their beats. However, it wasn't until the rise of the internet and the availability of cheap recording software that the genre really took off.

One of the key elements of the LoFi sound is its use of "found sounds" and samples from a wide variety of sources. This approach is similar to J Dilla's use of unconventional sampling sources and helped to create a sense of texture and atmosphere that is a hallmark of the LoFi genre.

Another defining characteristic of the LoFi sound is its use of tape hiss, vinyl crackle, and other imperfections that are typically edited out of more polished productions. This creates a sense of nostalgia and warmth that is often absent from more "clean" recordings.

J Dilla's influence on the LoFi genre can be heard in the work of many prominent artists, including Knxwledge, Madlib, and Earl Sweatshirt, all of whom have cited him as a major influence on their LoFi beats. His production techniques and emphasis on texture and atmosphere have helped to shape the sound of the genre and have inspired a new generation of producers to experiment with LoFi techniques.

Conclusion

J Dilla was a musical pioneer whose influence can be heard in the work of countless artists today. His unique approach to production, his use of unconventional sampling sources, and his emphasis on texture and atmosphere helped to shape the sound of hip-hop and electronic music in the late 1990s and early 2000s.

J Dilla's legacy extends beyond hip-hop and can also be felt in the emerging genre of LoFi music, where his influence can be heard in the work of many prominent artists. His production techniques and emphasis on imperfection and texture have helped to create a new aesthetic in music, one that celebrates the limitations and imperfections of the recording process.

As we look to the future of music, it is clear that J Dilla's legacy will continue to inspire new generations of artists and producers to push the boundaries of what is possible in music production. His influence is a testament to the power of creativity and innovation in music and will continue to shape the sound of the genre for years to come.

We will also examine the science behind it and provide some tips on how to incorporate it into your daily routine.

What is LoFi music?

LoFi music is a genre of music that is characterized by its mellow, relaxed, and often nostalgic sound. It is typically created using low-fidelity recording techniques, such as cassette tape recorders and vinyl records, and is known for its imperfections and analog warmth. LoFi music often incorporates elements of jazz, hip-hop, and electronic music and is often associated with relaxation, meditation, and studying.
The Science behind LoFi music and Focus

The Science behind LoFi music and Focus

Several studies have suggested that listening to music can have a positive effect on cognitive performance, including attention and focus. One study published in the Journal of the Acoustical Society of America found that background music can improve performance on cognitive tasks, including memory and attention. Another study published in the Journal of Music Therapy found that music can be an effective tool for reducing stress and anxiety.

When it comes to LoFi music specifically, there are several factors that may contribute to its ability to help people focus. Firstly, the slow and steady tempo of LoFi music can help regulate breathing and heart rate, inducing a relaxed state of mind. Secondly, the repetitive and predictable nature of LoFi music can create a sense of familiarity and comfort, reducing anxiety and stress. Lastly, the absence of lyrics in most LoFi music allows the listener to focus on the task at hand without being distracted by the words.

How LoFi music can help you focus

  • Create a Productive Environment
Listening to LoFi music can help create a productive environment for studying or working. The mellow and relaxing sounds can help you stay calm and focused, even in a busy and distracting environment. What Are Exclusive Hip Hop Beats?

What Are Exclusive Hip Hop Beats?

In the music industry, exclusive beats have become a popular term among music producers, artists, and fans. Exclusive beats are instrumentals that have been created by producers who have chosen to sell the rights to the beat to a single artist, rather than making it available to multiple artists. Exclusive beats are in high demand because they provide artists with unique instrumentals that are not widely available to other artists.

In this article, we will discuss the concept of exclusive beats, their importance in the music industry, and how artists can benefit from purchasing exclusive beats. We will also explore the process of purchasing exclusive beats and what artists should consider before making a purchase.
What are Exclusive Beats?

What are Exclusive Beats?

Exclusive beats are instrumental tracks that have been created by music producers and are sold to a single artist or buyer. This means that the artist who purchases the exclusive beat owns the exclusive rights to use that instrumental track for their own commercial or promotional purposes.
When a producer creates an exclusive beat, they typically spend a significant amount of time and effort to ensure that the instrumental track is of high quality and unique. Exclusive beats are often considered to be the best beats that a producer creates because they are intended for a single artist and are created to match the artist's specific needs and preferences.
Exclusive beats can be created in a wide range of genres, including hip hop, R&B, pop, electronic, and more. They can also be customized to match an artist's specific requirements, such as tempo, key, and melody.

Importance of Exclusive Beats

Exclusive beats are important in the music industry for several reasons. First and foremost, exclusive beats provide artists with unique instrumental tracks that are not widely available to other artists. This means that the artist who purchases the exclusive beat has access to an instrumental track that is not likely to be used by other artists, giving them a competitive advantage in the industry.
Exclusive beats also allow artists to create music that is truly unique and original. When an artist uses an exclusive beat, they are not limited by the beats that are available to the general public. Instead, they have the freedom to create music that is tailored to their individual style and preferences.
Another important benefit of exclusive beats is that they can help artists to stand out in a crowded music industry. With so many artists competing for attention, it can be difficult to get noticed. However, with a unique and high-quality exclusive beat, an artist can create a track that stands out from the crowd and catches the attention of music industry professionals and fans.
Additionally, exclusive beats can help artists to build a strong brand identity. By using exclusive beats that are consistent with their brand image and style, artists can create a cohesive and recognizable sound that sets them apart from other artists in the industry.
Purchasing Exclusive Beats

Purchasing Exclusive Beats

When it comes to purchasing exclusive beats, there are several factors that artists should consider before making a purchase. These factors include the producer's reputation, the price of the beat, and the terms of the agreement.
First and foremost, artists should research the producer's reputation before purchasing an exclusive beat. This includes reading reviews and testimonials from other artists who have worked with the producer, as well as listening to samples of the producer's work. By doing so, artists can ensure that they are working with a reputable and experienced producer who can create high-quality exclusive beats.
The price of the beat is also an important consideration. Exclusive beats can range in price from a few hundred dollars to several thousand dollars, depending on the producer's reputation and the quality of the beat. Artists should carefully consider their budget and the value that the exclusive beat will bring to their music before making a purchase.
The terms of the agreement are also an important consideration when purchasing exclusive beats. Artists should ensure that they understand the terms of the agreement, including the rights that they will have to the beat. This will be very different than beat lease agreements.
