Destiny Rogers talks about her inspirations and brand new EP 'Great Escape'.Music wasn’t always the priority for 21-year-old newcomer Destiny Rogers, quite the opposite. Her dream was to be a professional skateboarder and compete in the X Games. Until the age of 10, all of her passion was focussed on skating, and it wasn’t until her Dad bought her a guitar and she taught herself to play and sing, that she realized her true mission. “I started playing in church, so I found myself doing it a lot more than I ever had. My love for music developed, and it hit a little different. That’s when I knew music was my calling, and what I wanted to do as a career.”
Her music is genre-fluid and slides effortlessly between hip-hop, pop and R&B confidently propped up by Rogers’ strong vocals. She tells me that this genre-bending sound stems from her formative musical upbringing. “It’s everything I was raised on. Growing up, my mom always played Mexican music while she cleaned the house. At family parties, there were always oldies playing, Zapp and Roger, New Edition, and all the lowrider Chicano style music. In elementary school, my older sister would take songs and burn them all to a CD and play 90’s R&B in her car. Usher, TLC, SWV, Aaliyah. Then I also listened to my music, Justin Bieber, Demi Lovato, Rihanna.” You can hear that this eclectic cacophony is her influence and it has attracted the attention of her contemporaries, including pop-wunderkind Billie Eilish.
The ride that she has ridden since the release of her first EP ‘Tomboy’ in 2019 has been a wild one, with Rogers playing festivals and completing a world tour. Her second EP will catapult her even further, as she seems to have found her sound. The EP is personal, intimate and emotionally charged, as well as being sonically sensational.
